Winter Glitter

PUBLISHED ON January 28, 2008

The 2008 Winter Glitter formal did not disappoint those in attendance this past weekend. The traditional winter dance captured the attention and dance moves of the student body and faculty. Barron’s on Fifth, a Waco landmark and garden center, hosted the senior high dance while the junior high students mingled in Jaworski. Every year the dance provides an opportunity for the Vanguard Club to create an exciting occasion that begins the final semester of the year.

“I loved seeing everyone dress up in formal clothing and we got to eat at a really nice restaurant,” sophomore Hayley Johnson said.

Vanguard Club selected Barron’s to host the dance and decided to name the event “Garden Party.” The house was the perfect location for the dance and it exceeded its reputation as a quaint reception hall. The senior high danced all night to classic songs such as “YMCA,” and newer songs such as “Soulja Boi.” The disc jockey led the evenings’ activities with an appropriate balance of slow and fast-paced songs. Even some of the teachers could be found tapping their feet to the beat.

At the junior high dance, the flashing lights and “Snowball” decorations created an equally fun event. The seventh and eighth graders showed no limitation to their dancing abilities throughout the evening.

“I really enjoyed standing up and singing Beyonce,” seventh grader Jake Schwartz said. “They should have a Summer Glitter!”

Many students were even able to place song requests to the disc jockey. The homemade decorations added color to Jaworski and helped create a memorable night for the junior high Vikings.

“It was very fulfilling to see the process from start to finish,” junior high Winter Glitter coordinator Charlotte Cooper said.

Winter Glitter is a one-night event, but all the energy and efforts necessary to plan for such a dance stretch back into the early weeks of the school year. Finding a location open for the right weekend can be a daunting task, but it is just one of the many trials Vanguard Club must face every year.

“It was a lot of work!” Vanguard Club Co-President Claire Cole said. “But it was all worth it to have a great night and we were really excited about the final result.”
