School History
Founded in 1973 in Waco, Texas, Vanguard College Preparatory School has remained committed to academic excellence and character development. Grounded in the core values of rigor, respect, and responsibility, Vanguard continues to prepare students for success in college and beyond.
Key Milestones & Highlights
- 1973: Vanguard opens on September 4 with 106 students
- Located on an 8.5-acre, collegiate-style campus featuring historic limestone buildings from the 1930s and 1940s
- Campus acquisition and renovations supported by a grant from the Cooper Foundation
- Founding Leadership:
- Dr. Louis Bright, President of the Western Institute of Science and Technology (WIST)
- Dr. Jerry Vincent, Director of Education at WIST
- Dr. Abner McCall, President of Baylor University and first Chairman of the Board
- Early Academic Model:
- Individualized, mastery-based learning system
- Students progressed at their own pace, demonstrating understanding before advancing
- Supported by early computer-based instructional systems
- 1993: Establishment of the Vanguard Foundation to provide long-term financial support
- 2009: Significant endowment growth through a charitable trust from Jeanne and Russell Judson

- Serves approximately 300 students in grades 7–12
- Offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum

Leadership Transition:
- Bill Borg retires after 17 years of service
- Mr. Zach Seifert was appointed as Interim Head of School, leading Vanguard into its next chapter.
