Stephen Holze 1988

Stephen Holze ‘88 developed a love of basketball in junior high school and spent many hours honing his skills. After making an extremely talented Richfield High School freshman team, which included 4 players that became Division I scholarship athletes, Stephen transferred to Vanguard where he started on the Varsity team as a sophomore.  Incidentally, the first game he played at Vanguard was against his former teammates, who were now on the Richfield JV team.  Although Vanguard lost the game, Stephen led the team in scoring.  His sophomore season was highlighted by an all-tournament selection while leading Vanguard in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.  One of the more memorable moments for Stephen was during his sophomore season when he was asked to play in a JV game due to the lack of available players.  He almost recorded a triple double with points, rebounds and blocked shots, and then turned around and started the varsity game, playing 8 quarters in back-to-back games.  Stephen’s junior year saw many successes as he led Vanguard basketball under the guidance of new coach, Barry Hankins, to one of the school’s best seasons at the time.  Stephen was selected 1st team all-district and was named to 2 all-tournament teams.  He led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots again as Vanguard recorded an 18 – 10 record, advancing to the Regional Finals (Elite 8).  As a senior, Stephen led the team to a 16-9 record as Vanguard advanced to the round of 16 in the playoffs.  After 2 more all-tournament selections and another 1st team all-district selection, he was also selected to the Super Cen-Tex team at a time when private school players were not usually included.  Stephen finished his senior year leading the team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots for a third straight season.  Over 3 seasons as a Vanguard Viking, Stephen finished 3 points shy of 1,000 points, averaging over double figures in scoring all 3 years.  He also tallied over 600 rebounds and over 150 blocked shots in his 73-game career.

After declining offers to play basketball in college, Stephen attended Baylor University where he led his fraternity basketball team to multiple playoff runs in the Ferrell Center.  After graduating and marrying the love of his life, Christy (Dietz) Holze, a Vanguard Cheerleading Captain and Valedictorian of the Class of 1987, Stephen continued playing basketball leading both First Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church to numerous church league trophies.  He went on to win multiple city league YMCA championships and multiple “3 on 3” city championships, including one with an all-Vanguard team comprised of Stephen, Brad Livingstone, and Keith Henry.  After years of battling ankle injuries, Stephen transitioned from playing basketball to sharing his love of the game through several coaching positions.  As a college student, Stephen coached the Vanguard JV boys in the early 1990’s (with a career record of 45 – 17 over 4 seasons), and coached 6 seasons with St. Paul’s and Waco Montessori producing winning records in every season.

Stephen has built a very successful financial advising firm and real estate business over the last 30+ years. However, he is most proud of his family.  Stephen has been married for 32 years to Christy (1987).  They have two sons: Matthew, who is a 2019 Vanguard graduate, 2023 Hillsdale College graduate and current Vanguard teacher, and Andrew, a 2023 Vanguard graduate currently attending Auburn University.

Ashley Rasner Sutton '01

Ashley Rasner Sutton’s ’01 journey to becoming a Hall of Fame softball player is a story of passion, perseverance, and unexpected beginnings. At 10 years old, Ashley had no experience when she randomly decided to sign up for softball. She walked onto the field and ended up walking the first ten players. With support from her dad, the two of them worked hard for a solid year, transforming Ashley into a competitive player.

Ashley began her Vanguard journey in 9th grade, transferring from Robinson. She describes her time at Vanguard as life-changing, recalling how it prepared her for college by teaching her how to study effectively. Besides her softball prowess, Ashley was also a cheerleader during her sophomore, junior, and senior years, showcasing her versatility and commitment to athletics.

Over her high school career, Ashley led her team to the state championship three out of four years, with a close loss during her junior year. The summer after that junior year, she traveled with her team, the Centex Rebels, to play in the American Softball Association Class A 18-and-under national tournament, after they won 11 games in a row at one point.

During the run to state her senior year, Ashley didn’t allow an earned run in the playoffs. When asked about her most memorable moment on the field, Ashley fondly recalls winning during her senior year. It was a bittersweet victory, as it marked both an incredible achievement and the end of a chapter with a team that had become like family.

After leaving Vanguard, Ashley continued her softball career at Roanoke College, where she played for two years and pursued a major in History. Today, Ashley enjoys a quiet life in Riesel, Texas, alongside her husband, Eric Sutton. Together, they are raising their three children while also managing a small farm with chickens. Ashley’s journey from a student with no athletic background to a celebrated Hall of Fame inductee is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and love for the game.

Inspired by his older brother Browning, Larson said: “If my brother was playing sports, then I wanted to be playing sports.” His earliest memories of playing sports were Upward Basketball and pitching machine baseball. He began playing tennis in kindergarten and took that seriously throughout elementary school and into junior high.

Larson came to Vanguard in the 7th grade, and excelled in basketball, baseball, tennis and cross country. In 2006 and 2007 he made All-State in cross country. In 2008, he and his doubles partner Will Bauer won the state Doubles Championship. In baseball, Larson’s freshman and sophomore varsity teams, made of mostly underclassmen, won only five or six games each of those years. The experience paid off and they ended up as one of the top teams in the state his junior year, making it to the state semifinals. He was part of the All-State Tournament Baseball team in 2009.

Scott Goble

Scott Goble (‘99) excelled in four different sports while at Vanguard: cross country, track, basketball and baseball. Scott became the epitome of the Vanguard athlete who balanced many sports with a rigorous academic career.

Scott started playing tee ball when he was just four years old. When he was eight, he started playing basketball at the Woodway Family Center. Scott continued playing both sports when he came to Vanguard in the 7th grade, the same year his mother, who served as the head of school from 1996 to 2000, came to teach at the school.

Never having run before, Scott joined cross country in the fall of his 7th grade year and then track in the spring. He became a fierce competitor. In high school, Scott won the State Championship in Cross Country in 1995 and 1998.

Scott helped the boys’ basketball team win the district championship and advance to the regional finals for the first time in Vanguard history in 1998. Scott was All-District in basketball and received the sportsmanship award. He was named to the Academic All-Star team and played for the South.

Scott was also All-District in Baseball for two years. In 1999, his team made its way into the regional playoffs. His senior year, Scott was pushed in track by his brother Grant who was a freshman. Dubbed by the newspaper as “The Brothers Goble,” they went one and three, with Scott winning the state championships in the 1600m. Scott made it two state championships when he went on to also win the State 3200m.

Luana Sudan - Viking Parent Fan

Luana Sudan raised four Vanguard varsity athletes and was a constant supporter and contributor to Vanguard Athletics over more than 14 years. Starting in 1992 with her daughter Christy, who came to Vanguard as a 7th grader, Luana was a part of Vanguard as a parent until 2006. Her four children — Christy, Jason, Amy and Marybeth and two sons-in-law, Blake Marable and Jordan Ogden — all attended Vanguard.

Luana was a fan, supporting and encouraging her family and the Vanguard family among others with optimism, always seeing the good in people. Luana kindly donated countless hours of service to the athletic department and the school as a whole. She was head of the annual Vanguard garage sale for multiple years which supported the school and donated unthinkable hours to serving and assisting Vanguard athletics. In the words of one alumnus, “Luana Sudan is one of the kindest and most generous contributors in the history of Vanguard athletics.”

An alumni parent said, “What is etched indelibly was the ever present Viking Crew volunteer, Luana Sudan. The concession stand in the gym was the epicenter of all Vanguard Crew fundraising and hosting of campus events. Luana Sudan, alongside the tireless efforts of Jan Gummult, was on campus from concession stand lunches until the last whistle of the last play-off game. Then, it was out to the track, the softball field and to the baseball diamond to carry Viking Crew support to every event and game. Luana’s Vanguard career spans 20 years of support and volunteer service to Viking athletics and the Viking Crew. And, more importantly, she is a Hall of Fame Mother to her children.”

We celebrate a woman who was the heart of the athletic program and will continue to inspire families for generations to come as a part of the Vanguard Athletic Hall of Fame.
