Theatre

This course, offered to middle school students, is specifically designed to provide beginning theatre students with a comprehensive foundation in the origins and history of theatre. Through engaging lessons, students explore the works of numerous playwrights, representing a wide range of genres, styles, and historical periods. The curriculum not only focuses on theoretical knowledge but also emphasizes practical application. As part of their learning experience, students have the opportunity to perform a short piece during the annual Follies show in the fall and the Night of Fine Arts (N.O.F.A) in the spring, allowing them to showcase their developing skills and creativity in front of an audience.

This course, designed for high school students, places a stronger emphasis on performance and introduces participants to the art of performing on stage with confidence and poise. In addition to honing their acting skills, students gain valuable insights into the technical aspects of theatre production, such as lighting and sound design, providing a well-rounded understanding of the craft. Throughout the year, students showcase their talents at multiple events, including the annual Follies and the Night of Fine Arts (N.O.F.A.), offering them opportunities to apply their skills in real-world performance settings.

This advanced course challenges students to step outside their comfort zones, broadening and deepening their theatrical knowledge and abilities. Participants engage in the performance and analysis of both classic and contemporary plays, gaining a comprehensive understanding of diverse theatrical styles and techniques. These students take on multifaceted roles, including performing, stage management, and providing support for all performing arts events throughout the year. Additionally, Advanced Performing Arts students contribute to the creative process by writing original plays for the Vanguard children’s theatre summer camp, further enriching their experience and showcasing their talents as both performers and creators.

This exciting opportunity takes place in the fall and offers a dynamic experience for students passionate about theatre. Auditions are held in the spring, allowing interested students ample time to prepare and showcase their talents. The competition is open to all Vanguard students, regardless of whether they are enrolled in a theatre class, making it an inclusive and welcoming event for performers of all levels. Participants can look forward to an engaging and enjoyable process as they collaborate with peers, refine their skills, and bring their creativity to the stage in a spirited and memorable competition.

This vibrant competition, held in early spring, offers students a diverse range of opportunities to showcase their talents and passion for the performing arts. Categories include Prose, Poetry, Duet Acting, and Solo Acting, allowing participants to explore various forms of expression and performance. In addition to these engaging categories, students can take advantage of other competitive speaking opportunities, broadening their skill sets and challenging themselves in new ways. The event provides a supportive and exciting environment for students to display their abilities, connect with peers, and experience the thrill of competition in a celebration of creativity and excellence.
